Many patients are referred to physical therapy after seeing a General Practitioner, Orthopedic or Neurologic physician or Chiropractor. However, Virginia is considered a DIRECT ACCESS state, meaning you can seek physical therapy services without a prescription from a physician. This allows for a more efficient pathway for recovery, as treatment of musculoskeletal injuries can begin sooner. In some cases, the therapist may recommend you seeing a physician for further imaging if needed.
If you have not already completed your patient registration online, we ask that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow for signatures and completion of paperwork. The initial evaluation entails several steps that begin with a conversation between you and the therapist, that will review your medical history, your current activity level and your goals moving forward. Your therapist will then perform a thorough movement assessment, looking at both global movement patterns, as well as structural mobility of your musculoskeletal system. Through this analysis, your therapist will be able to identify deficits in flexibility, strength and muscle imbalances that can assist in determining the root causes of your pain or dysfunction.
A plan of care is subsequently developed, with the patient being an integral part of goal-setting. This will include recommendations on frequency and duration of physical therapy visits, instruction in home or gym exercises, education in more efficient movement patterns during daily or sports activities, and instruction in self-care techniques.
Please be sure to book your appointments at least 2 - 4 weeks in advance to ensure dates and times that are convenient for you. Consistent attendance will ensure your receive the maximum benefit from your physical therapy program.
Here are a few recommendations for your first visit:
• Have dates (injury onset or surgery date) available.
• Bring your current medication list (if applicable).
